mosquitoes, Mosquitoes, MOSQUITOES!

Woohoo, another week down and two more weeks to go until we pick up our Defender from Galveston. Then we’re headed on our Great American Adventure. Not sure if that’s the name we’re going to stick with calling our endless roadtrip but for now it will do.

We’ve left Louisiana and the air conditioned yurt and now we’re in hot, humid Texas and no A/C. We spent the last couple days visiting family in Nacogdoches because I waited too long to book a campsite and none were available for Memorial Day weekend.

Now, it’s the first week of June and we’ve made it to Double Lake Recreation Area in Coldsprings, Texas. The idea is we will be close to Galveston to make for easier pick up once the boat arrives with our vehicle.

First thought when we arrived today? Mosquitoes, mosquitoes, MOSQUITOES! The minute, actually the second we stepped out of our truck, every single one of us was swarmed by mosquitoes. It. Was. Unbearable.

Miss Drama lost her mind and actually ran down the road screaming at the miniature blood suckers to “Leave me alone,” “I can’t put up the tent with these things biting me,” and “Get away from me you horrible things!” I may have loudly encouraged her run when she wouldn’t quit complaining about the little pests while helping to pitch tent.

That left me and #2 to put up the tent solo because Little Bit was sleeping and the Stubborn One refused to leave the Explorer. About halfway through Ms. Drama came back and actually helped without complaining. It took a bit longer than usual but we finally got the tent up with several bites each to show for our hard work.

Hoping to find something or anything to ward off the tiny blood suckers, we took a 30-minute drive to closest open store, Wal-mart, where we found some citronella candles to create a perimeter around the table, firepit and sitting area. Even with all the candles lit, there was little relief and we spent the night in the tent killing any buggers who managed to sneak there way inside with us.

As far as first nights go, this one’s been a doozy. Hoping things get better and we can actually enjoy our time here otherwise it’ll be a long two weeks.
