Day 5 – More Research Needed – 108 miles

Today we finally made it to Hell’s Canyon and it was very anticlimatic.

We started out with a fantastic fire grilled breakfast of bacon, eggs, and hashbrowns. Thanks to Mr. Dependable’s fantastic wood gathering skills we had plenty for a lovely fire. Then a walk along the Weisser River trail to get out some energy before hitting the road for Hell’s Canyon.

After some exercise, we headed to the Pittsburg Landing Campground in Hell’s Canyon because of the petroglyphs left behind from the Nez Perce Native Americans. But, we never even made it to the petroglyphs because once the kids saw how sparse the campground was and that there was no access to the river for spashing, they called it quits.

They all refused to stay there and begged for us to find a different place. Not mention it was about a 5-mile hike to the glyphs and it was blazing hot down in the canyon. So, we took some photos and videos because the canyon was still stunning and then we headed back up out of the canyon which in and of itself was a hassle because one again we had to do it in low gear and the engine got way too hot that we had to stop halfway to let it cool down.

Once we finally made it out of the canyon and down the other side to the Salmon river, we found a nice looking RV park and decided to stop and see if they had any open spots.

They had a few and though it was a bit pricey we decided to stay for the night. The amenities they offered were awesome and there was a beach nearby along the river where the kids could splash about, fish, and search for special rocks.

There was a stone firepit in a gazebo just a few steps from our site where we roasted marshmallows and enjoyed a quiet evening. They also had a pavilion with a grill and stove for cooking and the campground provided the propane for both.

The kids all appreciated the flushing toilets and I enjoyed the peacefulness of camping next to the river.

Now we’re off toward Montana and Glacier National Park.
