Leaving New York

Devil’s Hole, Devil’s Hole State Park, New York

It was a long day today. We wrapped up our adventures in Niagara Falls and headed east towards Vermont. What’s in Vermont you might be wondering? Ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and their ice cream Factory to be specific. Pretty good reason to head to Vermont, huh?

We’re not there yet though. We made it about 200 miles east of Buffalo before calling it quits for the night. The kids and I were exhausted with everything we tried to cram into the day.

After the long day yesterday waiting around for the truck to get fixed, we spent the night at a “fancy” hotel as the kids put it. That meant lots of cool hotel stuff to do this morning – arcade, pool, lunch at the Rainforest Café. Then it was time to hit the road.

But, there were a few other things I wanted to do on the way out of town first. Devil’s Hole, Power Vista and Platter’s Chocolate.

Power Vista is a visitor center/museum of sorts where children and grown ups alike can learn how electricity is generated from the Niagara river and then how it is monitored and measured to meet the electricity needs of the surrounding areas. Plus, they have one of those static electricity balls you put your hand on to end up with crazy hair. It was an awesome time.

Platter’s Chocolate is a chocolate factory where they make among other things sponge candy. This is very similar to the honeycomb of England, but ten times more delicious. We just missed getting to see the factory in operation – we got there a bit after closing, but we still got to enjoy some sweets and hot chocolate in their café and bought some chocolate for the road.

By the time we made it to our chosen spot to boondock for the night, everyone was knackered. They all crawled up in the tent and were fast asleep by the time I made it up to join them. It’s okay though because tomorrow is going to be just as busy as we finish our drive to Vermont where we’ll learn about maple syrup and ice cream. Yum!
