Long Live the County Fair

We’re getting ready to wrap up our time here in Pennsylvania before heading up to Niagara Falls. But I couldn’t go until introducing the young’uns to a country fair – fully equipped with smelly barn stalls, tractor pulls, rides galore, fried foods out the wazoo, and of course a demolition derby and fireworks.

It was fantastic, until I lost Zachary. He’d had enough of the fireworks and just wandered off to the next ride he wanted to do. This kid seriously gives me gray hairs. I wasn’t by myself either. Three grown adults standing there and he managed to slip past all of us. I’m seriously considering some kind of tether.

Other than those scary few moments it took to find him one ride over, it was an ah-mazing night. Admission included all the rides, so the kids got to ride and slide to their hearts content. They played games, ate elephant ears and funnel cakes and drank freshly shaken lemonade. Mr. #2 saw cars explode and catch on fire during the demolition derby while Little One got to ride a pony. We saw glass blowers make cool stuff and then break uncool stuff. We even saw a robotic lawn mower. That’s right a robot lawn mower. It was just like those little robot vacuum cleaners going around your house vacuuming all day long. Except this robot knew how to mow grass and executed it perfectly.

It was all in all a fantastic night.

The children loved it. I loved it. We all loved it, even my sister who gave into the begging and went on one of the rides with the kids.

Tonight brought back some fond memories of fairs gone past and time spent with friends and family. I hope my children will be able to look back on this night years from now and feel just as enchanted by the county fairs as I do.
