Falling Down in the Rain

Sometimes it’s just easier to eat out for dinner and boondock for the night than it is to find a campground, set up camp, cook and clean up all before being able to hit the hay for the night.

Last night was one of those nights. We left DC and headed northwest towards Pittsburgh with the intention of stopping to see some relatives along the way. There wasn’t really anywhere convenient to stop on our path, so instead we found a Cracker Barrell and made camp for the night.

Thanks to Amanda from JB Andrews, I learned about a website to help RVers to find places to park overnight whether it be for free or a paid spot. One of the neat things I learned was both Cracker Barrell and Camping World offer RV parking spots in their lots for those who are traveling and just need a place to park for the night without any hook-ups.

We tried it for the first time yesterday and it was ah-mazing. Rather than eat there for dinner though, we headed in for breakfast. It was so nice to not have to get up and cook in the morning and then rush to pack up everything so we could get on the road. This time someone else did the cooking and the only thing to pack up was the tent.

The downside was the rain. Just as we were starting to pack up the tent it started to drizzle. I thought no big deal we’ve had to cope with much worse situations. The one thing I did not take into account was how slippery the roof would be when climbing down. I was wearing flip flops and slipped and fell off the roof and down onto the hood – thank goodness for plated hoods meant to withstand great amounts of force. Unluckily, the diamond plating on the hood left a nasty gash in my elbow.

#2 was there to make sure I was okay though as well as the other children too. He was up on the hood and making sure I was all right and offering hugs. Meanwhile Miss Drama grabbed the first aid kit as soon as she saw the blood. Other than the gash on the elbow only my pride was bruised though.

Next time it rains, I’ll definitely be wearing different footwear before climbing up on the roof. And after our positive experience, I see at least a few more boondocking nights at Cracker Barrell in our future.
