We’ve had a great couple of days enjoying the sun and surf of Onslow Beach at Camp Lejeune. But, it’s still not cool enough for me, so we’re heading northward to hopefully find a bit more reprieve from the heat.
This originally was not a scheduled stop for us, but the kids enjoyed our first day here so much they asked to stay a couple more. The highlight for them was we were camped next to one of the pavilions used for group functions. While we were camped next to it, there were two separate gatherings on two separate days. This meant over the weekend they got to enjoy some free food and bouncy castles. The coolest castle was a water slide which helped them to stay cool. Little One and I spent our time staying cool on the beach which thankfully was right across the street from where we were camped.
The heat wouldn’t have been so unbearable if it hadn’t brought out the mosquitoes and midges a.k.a. no-see-ums. This made sleeping difficult because it was too warm out to cover up to protect ourselves from the buggers yet if you didn’t cover up you got eaten alive. It was a no-win situation in the heat/bug department.
The upside was our amazing neighbors. Dee and her husband shared meals, snacks, and water with us while giving us some advice about camping spots up the coast and into Pennsylvania. They were a wonderful couple and we hope to see you guys on the road again sometime in the future.
My favorite part of this weekend though was the sunrises. I’ve never been on the east coast anywhere to see the sunrise over the Atlantic. Even when we were in England, we always camped along the west coast which was great for sunsets, but never sunrises. Finally, I got to fulfill my desire to see the sunrise over the ocean and it was phenomenal.
Hoping I get to see a few more as we make our way up the coast as this one made all the bug bites, hot days, and uncomfortable nights worthwhile.
